Ingredients
  

For the apple mixture
  • 8 medium medium apples, peeled and chopped Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for best flavor
  • ½ cup brown sugar For the apple mixture
  • ¼ cup flour For the apple mixture
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon For the apple mixture
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp salt
For the topping
  • ¾ cup flour
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ cup cold butter, cubed Ensure butter is very cold for best texture
  • 1 cup rolled oats

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  2. Toss the chopped apples with ½ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup flour, vanilla extract, 1 tsp cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Pour the mixture into the greased dish.
Topping
  1. In a bowl, mix the remaining ¾ cup flour, ¾ cup brown sugar, and 1 tsp cinnamon.
  2. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture looks crumbly.
  3. Stir in the rolled oats and evenly spread the topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
Baking
  1. Bake for 45 minutes or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden and bubbly.
  2. Cool for 5 minutes and serve warm with ice cream or drizzle with caramel.
