Ingredients

For the Apple Filling
  • 12 cups peeled, sliced apples Firm, slightly tart varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji work best.
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice Prevents apples from browning.
  • 1 Tbsp water
For the Crisp Topping
  • 1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar Light or dark brown sugar works.
  • 1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour Use a reliable blend with xanthan gum.
  • 1 cup gluten-free rolled oats Certified gluten-free.
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter Or non-dairy alternative.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the peeled, cored, and sliced apples with 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, lemon juice, and water. Stir gently until fruit is evenly coated. Transfer to a 9x13 inch baking pan.
Making the Topping
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together brown sugar, gluten-free flour, gluten-free oats, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  2. Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter or non-dairy alternative. Use a pastry cutter or two knives to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until you achieve a crumbly texture.
Assembly
  1. Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apple filling in the baking pan.
Baking
  1. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown. Monitor the last 10 minutes to prevent over-browning.
Serving
  1. Let cool for 10-15 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with any of your favorite toppings.
