Pasta and Vegetables
  • 8 ounces penne pasta
  • 2 cups fresh broccoli florets Bite-sized
Main Ingredients
  • 13.9 ounces kielbasa sausage, sliced Into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 1.5 cups whole milk
  • 1.5 cups shredded mild cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper To taste

Method

Cooking Pasta and Broccoli
  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package directions.
  2. Two minutes before the pasta is done, add the broccoli florets to the pot.
  3. Drain the pasta and broccoli together and set aside. Reserve a small cup of the pasta water.
Making the Sauce
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Melt the butter, then add the sliced kielbasa and sauté until browned, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, cooking for 2-3 minutes until the onion is translucent.

  4. Reduce heat to low and stir in the cheddar cheese until melted.
Combining and Serving

Notes

For added flavor, brown the kielbasa well. If the sauce thickens too much, add a splash of milk or reserved pasta water to loosen it. Serve with a sprinkle of black pepper or extra cheese on top, along with a side salad or crusty bread.
